  46. Monsieur Signy l'Abbaye was a master artist in his day, who was ready to retire in 1392 in the month of May, but Guiliano Bartoli, a rich Italian patron

(資助人), sent for him, saying, "I'd like a portrait of myself on my banquet room wall. Could you paint it? It’s 20 feet tall. "

  47. It was a day like the day before and the day after. The wind wrapped itself around the sod cabin as the family carried out their tasks pretending not to hear. They heard the wind, however. It had been their constant companion on the open plains since their journey from Philadelphia two years before in the spring of 1865. Following the covered wagon train often, the wind had lifted the landscape into billows of dust falling on everyone and everything until there seemed only one color and one sound.

  48. Once there was an elderly widow, Chen Ma, who lived with her only son inside a forest in Shanxi Province. Her son was one of the tiger hunters licensed by the local court, following the same profession as his father and grandfather before him. His share of the profits from the sale of tiger skins, meat and bones was sufficient to keep the small mud hut well-provided for himself and his old mother.

  49. The Halloween House is big and old. I'm told that on Halloween night things happen there.

Tonight is Suzie's first Halloween at the Halloween House: She finished her trick or treat, earlier in the evening. She dressed up as a pumpkin with an orange glow - and now her two bags of candy are spilling onto the floor.

50.The shooflies were made from a small amount of horsehair folded in half and wrapped in buckskin. The shoofly would then be clipped onto the favorite spot selected by each rider.

When the horses had their tails cleaned, the hair was saved for Sti'Tumma, who then went to work to make herself some beautiful and colorful shooflies.

FILTON, just outside Bristol, is where Britain’s fleet of Concorde supersonic(超音速的)airliners was built. There, something remarkable is being created. Little by little a machine is “printing” a complex titanium bracket (鈦合金支架), about the size of a shoe, which normally would have to be cut from a solid block of metal. Brackets are only the beginning. The researchers at Filton have a much bigger ambition: to print the entire wing of an airliner.

Unrealistic as this may seem, many other people are using 3D printing technology to create similarly remarkable things. These include medical implants, jewellery, football boots designed for individual feet, lampshades, racing-car parts, solid-state batteries and customized mobile phones. Some are even making mechanical devices (儀器). At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Peter Schmitt, a PhD student, has been printing something that is like the workings of a grandfather clock. It took him a few attempts to get right, but eventually he removed the plastic clock from a 3D printer, hung it on the wall and pulled down the counterweight. It started ticking.

Engineers and designers have been using 3D printers for more than a decade, but mostly to make original types quickly and cheaply before they embark on the expensive business of tooling up a factory to produce the real thing. As 3D printers have become more able to work with a broader range of materials, including production-grade plastics and metals, the machines are increasingly being used to make final products too. More than 20% of the output of 3D printers is now final products rather than original types, according to Terry Wohlers, who runs a research firm specializing in the field. He predicts that this will rise to 50% by 2024.

  1. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

  A. Filton is in the centre of Bristol.

  B. Peter tried to print a clock, but in vain.

  C. a remarkable metal bracket is being created.

  D. 3D printing technology is available to all of us.

  2. The underlined word “embark” probably means “_________”.

  A. workB. landC. dependD. fix

  3. We can conclude from the last paragraph that __________.

  A. Terry Wohlers’ s firm will make great profits

  B. the technology of 3D printers will be widely adopted

  C. 3D printers have been in use for at least 100 years

  D. engineers and designers prefer printing original products

  4. The passage is developed mainly in the form of _______.

  A. time and events

  B. definition and description

  C. contrast and conclusion

  D. examples and statements

Today just as technology changed the face of industry, farms have experienced an “agricultural revolution”. On the farm of today, machines provide almost all the power.

One of the most important benefits will be the farm computer. A few forward-looking farmers are already using computers to help them run their farms more efficiently. The computers help them keep more accurate records so they can make better decisions on what crops to plant, how much livestock (家畜) to buy, when to sell their products, and how much profit they can expect. Many computer companies have been developing special computer programs just for farmers. Programs are being written for pig producers, grain farmers, potato farmers, and dairy farmers. In the future, farmers will be able to purchase computer programs made to their needs. Because of the growing importance of computers on the farm, students at agricultural colleges are required to take computer classes in addition to their normal agricultural courses. There can be no doubt that farmers will rely on computers even more in the future. While the old-time farms depended on horse power, and modern farms depend on machine power, farms of the future will depend on computer power.

Another technological advance which is still in the experimental stage is the robot, a real “mechanized hired hand”that will be able to move and, in some ways, think like a human being. Agricultural engineers believe that computer-aided robots will make shocking changes in farming before the end of the century. Unlike farmers of the present, farmers of the future will find that many day-to-day tasks will be done for them. Scientists are now developing robots that will be able to shear (修剪)sheep, drive tractors, and harvest fruit. Even complex jobs will be done by robots. For example, in order to milk their cows, farmers must first drive them into the barn, then connect them to the milking machines, watch the machines, and disconnect them when they are finished. In the future, this will all be done by robots. In addition, when the milking is completed, the robots will automatically check to make sure that the milk is pure. The complete change of the farm is far in the future, but engineers expect that some robots will be used before long.

This is an open letter to the three people who stole my handbag from the department store I am employed as a shop assistant.

When you took my bag, I don’t know what you thought you were going to get. With my wages, there's not much left on a Tuesday. I hope the £5 was useful to you . I have informed the social security office so you won’t be able to cash the child benefit next week. I hope that won't leave you too short. But if you really need a couple of pounds, I suppose you could always cash one of the two checks left in my check book. Of course, I phoned the bank right away and the check-casing card is no longer valid, so it won’t be much use to you.

Actually I don’t mind about the money too much. We single parents who work to support our families understand only too well what it means to be short of cash. However, I don’t suppose it went very far among the three of you. Sorry about that!

I wish you had left the bag behind and just taken the wallet and check book. There were all kinds of papers in it, and notes and things that I really need. I really think that was very inconsiderate of you. I mean, how would you like something like that to happen to you?

Well, perhaps the bag will turn up. It wasn’t even an expensive one, just a plain, old brown leather shoulder bag. You probably dumped it in the nearest rubbish bin or threw it into the bushes. We've looked around, of course, but no one saw which way you went after you left the shop.

I'm not really angry with you. I know how the pressures of modern living can affect us, but I am sad at the loss of my personal things. I feel violated and helpless. The police were very icy, and they just shrugged their shoulders. “It happens all the time,” they told me. Some small comfort, I suppose. But I’ve lost just a little more faith in human nature. And as my young son said when

told him what had happened, “Why? Mummy, why us?” I couldn't answer that question. I wonder if you can.

  1. In writing Paragraph 2, the writer wants to

  .

  A. describe the contents of the bag in detail.

  B. give some suggestions to the three thieves

  C. state the fact that she was careless with the money

  D. tell the thieves hardly any money was available

  2. Which of the following is the most valuable to the writer?

  A. The cash in her bag. B. The handbag itself.

  C. The papers and notes in the bag. D. The check books in the bag.

  3. What can we conclude about the police?

  A. They think the case quite common. B. They show sympathy for the woman.

  C. They have doubts about human nature. D. They are unable to find the thieves.

  4. Why does the author write the letter?

  A. To give the thieves a serious warning.

  B. To express her affection for her valuable bag.

  C. To call people’s attention to their belongings.

  D. To complain about the fall of morality.

Job sharing refers to the situation in which two people divide the responsibility of one full-

time job. The two people willingly act as part-time workers, enough hours between them to fulfill

the duties of a full-time worker. If they each work half the job, for example, they each receive 50

per cent of the job’s wages, its holidays and its other benefits.

Job sharing differs from conventional part-time work in that it occurs mainly in the more highly skilled and professional areas, which require higher levels of responsibility and employee commitment.

Job sharing should not be confused with the term work sharing, which refers to increasing the number of jobs by reducing the number of hours of each existing job, thus offering more positions to the growing number of unemployed people. Job sharing, by contrast, is not designed to address unemployment problems; its focus, rather, is to provide well-paid work for skilled workers and professionals who want more free time for other activities.

As would be expected, most job sharers are women. A survey carried out in 1988 by Britain’s Equal Opportunities Commission showed that 78 per cent of sharers were female, the majority of whom were between 20 and 40 years of age. Subsequent studies have come up with similar results. Many of these women were re-entering the job market after having had children, but they chose not to seek part-time work because it would have meant lower status. Job sharing also offered an acceptable shift back into full-time work after a long absence.

The necessity of close cooperation when sharing a job with another person makes the actual work quite different from conventional one-position jobs. However, to ensure a greater chance that the partnership will succeed, each person needs to know the strengths, weaknesses and preferences of his or her partner before applying for a position. Moreover, there must be a fair division of both routine tasks and interesting ones. In sum, for a position to be job-shared well, the two individuals must be well matched and must treat each other as equals.

  1. In what way is work sharing different from job sharing?

  A. Work sharing is aimed at creating more jobs.

  B. Work sharing requires more working hours.?

  C. Work sharing provides a more satisfactory salary.

  D. Work sharing depends on the employer’s decision.

  2. According to Paragraph 4, young mothers preferred job sharing to conventional part-time work

  mainly because _________.

  A. they were over ideal working ages

  B. they sought higher social status

  C. they had difficulty finding full-time jobs ???

  D. they had to take care of both work and family

  3. In job sharing the partners should __________.

  ?

  A. enjoy equal social status????????????????????

?? B. have similar work experience

  ?

  C.??know each other very well

  ?????????

? ? D. keep in touch with each other?

  4. The main purpose of the passage is to ___________.

  A. discuss how to provide more jobs???

  B. describe job sharing in general

  C.?recommend job sharing to women

  D. compare job sharing with work sharing????

  The Child Ego State

The Child ego state is a set of behaviors, thoughts and feelings which are replayed from our own childhood.

Perhaps the boss calls us into his or her office, we may immediately get a churning in our stomach and wonder what we have done wrong. If this were explored we might remember the time the head teacher called us in to tell us off. Of course, not everything in the Child ego state is negative. We might go into someone’s house and smell a lovely smell and remember our grandmother’s house when we were little, and all the same warm feelings we had at six years of age may come flooding back.

The Child ego states are constantly being updated. For example, we may meet someone who gives us the permission we needed as a child, and did not get, to be fun and joyous. We may well use that person in our imagination when we are stressed to resist our old ways of thinking that we must work longer and longer hours to keep up with everything. We might ask ourselves “I wonder what X would say now.” Then on hearing the new permissions to relax and take some time out, do just that and then return to the work renewed and ready for the challenge. Afterwards, rather than blaming ourselves for what we did or did not do, what tends to happen is that we automatically start to give ourselves new permissions and take care of ourselves.
