  閱讀下列四篇短文,從每小題后所給的A,B,C或D四個(gè)選項(xiàng)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng)。

  America's Top 4 Tourist Attractions

Below you'll find the most popular travel and vacation destinations in the US.

  1.Times Square,New York City

This Manhattan crossroads of commerce is the top spot on our list, thanks to increasing visitors to the Big Apple in 2008 despite the economic turndown.According to statistics,“80% of visitors to NYC make it a point to visit Times Square.”Total NYC visits last year were 47 million, giving us an estimate of 37.6 million travelers through the“Crossroads of the World”.

  2.The Las Vegas Strip,Nev.

The“Neon Trail”that makes up the heart of Sin City is also part of the federal government's National Scenic Byways Program, which designates roads based on “archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational and scenic qualities”.Hard to say which of these qualities best describes Vegas, but we can disqualify“natural”.Last year, total visitors to Las Vegas numbered 37.5 million;a poll by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority found that an average of 80% of visitors had either stayed overnight or gambled(賭博)on the Strip.

  3.National Mall and Memorial Parks,Washington,D.C.

Many of the nation's iconic(圖標(biāo)的)public landmarks are found in the 1,000-plus acres of the National Mall and Memorial Parks, including the Washington Monument, the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, and the Korean and Vietnam War Veterans memorials. The Smithsonian Institution's 19 museums are also close to the Mall;last year, the network of free museums drew more than 25 million visitors.

  4.Faneuil Hall Marketplace,Boston

Built in 1742 by Peter Faneuil,a wealthy Boston merchant,F(xiàn)aneuil Hall served as a commercial center of the city for centuries and a site for famous orations(演說(shuō)),like Samuel Adams' independence-rallying speech to colonists.Faneuil also includes the restored 19th-century Quincy Market.Today, shoppers account for a large share of visitors.Faneuil's historic significance vaults it to the status of cultural attraction, attracting 20 million visitors every year.

According to the US government, wind farms off the Pacific coast could produce 900 gigawatts of electricity every year. Unfortunately, the water there is far too deep for even the tallest windmills to touch bottom. An experiment under way off the coast of Norway, however, could help put them anywhere.

The project, called Hywind, is the world抯 first large-cscale deepwater wind turbine (渦輪發(fā)電機(jī)). Although it uses a fairly standard 152-ton, 2. 3-megawatt turbine, Hywind represents totally new technology. The turbine will be fixed 213 feet above the water on a floating spar, a technology Hywind’s creator, the Norwegian company StatoilHydro, has developed recently. The steel spar, which is filled with stones and goes 328 feet below the sea surface, will be tied to the ocean floor by three cables ; these will keep the spar stable and prevent the turbine from moving up and down in the waves. Hywind’s stability in the cold and rough sea would prove that even the deepest corners of the ocean are suitable for wind power. If all goes according to the plan, the turbine will start producing electricity six miles off the coast of southwestern Norway as early as September.

To produce electricity on a large scale, a commercial wind farm will have to use bigger turbines than Hywind does, but it’s difficult enough to balance such a large turbine so high on a floating spar in the middle of the ocean. To make that turbine heavier, the whole spar抯 rcenter of gravity must be moved much closer to the ocean’s surface. To do that, the company plans to design a new kind of wind turbine, one whose gearbox (變速箱) sits at sea level rather than behind the blades.

Hywind is a test run, but the benefits for perfecting floating wind-farm technology could be extremely large. Out at sea, the wind is often stronger and steadier than close to shore, where all existing offshore windmills are planted. Deep-sea farms are invisible from land, which helps overcome the windmill-as-eyesore objection. If the technology catches on, it will open up vast areas of the planet’s surface to one of the best low-carbon power sources available.

  1. The Hywind project uses totally new technology to ensure the stability of

   .

  A. the cables which tie the spar to the ocean floor

  B. the spar which is floating in deep-sea water

  C. the blades driven by strong and steady sea wind

  D. the stones filled in the spar below the sea surface

  2. To balance a bigger turbine high on a floating spar, a new type of turbine is to be designed

  with its gearbox sitting

   .

  A. on the sea floorB. on the spar top C. at sea level D. behind the blades

  3. Wide applications of deepwater wind power technology can

  .

  A. solve the technical problems of deepwater windmills

  B. make financial profits by producing more turbines

  C. settle the arguments about environmental problems

  D. explore low-carbon power resources available at sea

  參考答案1—3、BCD

  閱讀下列四篇短文,從每小題后所給的A,B,C或D四個(gè)選項(xiàng)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng)。

For many of us, aspirin, one of the most common nonprescription drugs, is a constant companion. It is the most effective drug that we have, and if we eliminated all but three drugs, aspirin would definitely be one of the three drugs we should keep. Even with all the new drugs available, it still has a place in many of our medicine cabinets, as a “miracle drug” in its ability to fight pain and inflammation (炎癥) and even more amazing in its ability to reduce heart attack and stroke risk.

Aspirin is the first member of a class of substances called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs非甾體抗炎藥). These drugs reduce pain, fever and inflammation, and are used to treat a variety of conditions. Many believe that aspirin has many benefits not yet fully understood. Media reports on the use of aspirin to prevent or treat diseases such as heart attacks and cancer leave many people struggling to keep all the facts straight. Others who cannot tolerate aspirin might feel a bit left out as new uses and benefits of aspirin continue to appear in the news.

In all cases, more researches are needed to determine what benefits aspirin may provide and whether these benefits would outweigh the potential side effects. Aspirin, for example, is known to cause gastrointestinal (胃腸的) bleeding with heavy use, and there is research that indicates an increased risk of bleeding-related stroke in people who use it regularly. In some cases, these reactions can be killers. Another potentially deadly problem is aspirin poisoning and most people don’t know about it.

Before you start taking any of these over-the-counter (不需處方也可出售的) drugs on a long-term basis, it’s a good idea to discuss it with your health care provider.

  1. From the second paragraph we know .

  A. Humans have fully understood the benefits of aspirin.

  B. Aspirin is the only member of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

  C. Not every one of us can take aspirin.

  D. Aspirin can be used to stop bleeding.

  2. What’s the third paragraph mainly about?

  A. Many researches about aspirin.

  B. Aspirin’s side effects.

  C. New uses of aspirin.

  D. The unknown aspects about aspirin.

  3. The underlined word in the first paragraph means .

  A. kept B. saved

  C. investigatedD. removed

  4. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?

  A. Aspirin can cure us of most diseases.

  B. Aspirin is important in reducing pain and heart attack.

  C. The side effects of aspirin outweigh its benefits.

  D. We can buy some aspirin and take it immediately if we don’t feel well.

  One night,however,her husband,said to her,“Honey,I'm sorry,but you're not bringing in any income.We can't do this anymore.We can't survive on just what I make.”

That night, her heart broken and her mind too busy to let her sleep. She stared at the ceiling in their darkened bedroom.Debbie knew—with all of the responsibilities of keeping up a house and looking after four kids—that working 40 hours a week would leave her no time to write.

Seeing her despair, her husband woke up and asked,“What's wrong?”

“I really think I could have made it as a writer,I really do.”

Wayne was silent for a long time, and then said,“All right, honey,go for it.”

So Debbie returned to her dream and her typewriter on the kitchen table, pounding out page after page for another two years. Her family went without vacations, pinched pennies, and wore hand-me-downs.

But the sacrifice and the persistence finally paid off. After five years of struggling,Debbie sold her first book. Then another. And another.Until finally, today,Debbie has published more than 100 books, three of which have been sold for movies.Over 60 million copies are in print, and she has millions of loyal fans.

And Wayne? All that sacrifice in support of his wife paid off handsomely. He got to retire at age 50 and now spends his time building an airplane in the basement of their 7,000 square-foot mansion.
