Rob: Thats right.
Helen: And then 你寫的是: 有我這動聽的聲音，誰還會想到你呢. Thats a horrible thing to say, Rob! 你太過分了!
Rob: Well, it would be horrible if it was a serious message. But havent you noticed my emoticon at the end of the message ?
Helen: Emoticon? I have the message printed out here... 對了我看到了，這不一個冒號，一個破折號，最后是一個后括號，看上去嗎是個笑臉兒 a smiley face... Yes沒錯，是個笑臉。Its an emoticon 原來你是在開玩笑!:-)
Rob: Yes. Emoticons were created precisely for this purpose, to avoid misunderstandings like the one weve just had. I wrote my message as a joke and you took it seriously ...
Helen: Thats right. 最近有篇報道說 emoticons 表情符號是30年前由美國匹茲堡卡內基梅隆大學的一位教授首創的. Emoticon 這個英語單詞是 emotional 情緒和 icon 符號合并組成，也就是表情符號。
Rob: It also indicates if a message is serious or a joke. When you speak, you can express if you are serious about what you are saying but sometimes it is difficult to achieve this on paper. Listen to some verbal examples.
(angry) I dont like to go to the cinema with you. You always fall asleep and end up snoring loudly.
(jokingly) I dont like to go to the cinema with you. You always fall asleep and end up snoring loudly!
Helen: Thats right, Rob. 在你講話的時候你可以通過語調來表達你的意思，但是在書寫時就很難以同樣的方式來表達。
Rob: But its good to point out that emoticons are still an informal sort of message. It might not look good if you use them in a message to your boss or include them in your CV.
Helen: 說的好。這點一定要記住，表情符 emoticons 是很隨便的一種表達，不能用在正式場合，比如給老板的郵件或個人履歷表。We should be careful when using emoticons .
Rob: Emoticons have become so popular that there are over a hundred of them. Some with a proper round yellow face.
Helen: 既然我們消除了誤會 misunderstanding, 我們是不是應該出去慶祝一下表情符 emoticon 發明30周年呢，至少應該喝杯咖啡，吃塊蛋糕吧。
